Summit Team Training Expedition Report

After an early start on Saturday morning we were in the mountains ready walk for a day. The weather couldn’t have been better: clear skies, bright sunshine, and very warm! Well, for North Wales it was anyway. We practised the ice axe arrest, walking roped up and walking with crampons on. All very interesting and proved to be more difficult than expected! At the end of the day the weather turned for the worse, the winds picked up and the snow started to fall. We were in a blizzard. However, I believe this was ideal so we could experience the real mountains!

After a well appreciated sleep we woke up and headed off the mountains for training session number two. This time it wasn’t meant to be physically demanding, or mentally. It was just to practise walking on fixed ropes in teams using our brand new ascenders. However, if we thought the blizzard from the previous evening was bad, this was on a different level. The winds were gale force and the snow was so heavy our eyesight was limited. Another excellent reminder that mountains aren’t always what they make out to be! Even for the more experienced members of the team who have grown up climbing them! We quickly finished off our training and headed back to Tree Top Adventure High Rope course for a debrief and a chat before heading home.

It was an amazing weekend and we owe a massive thanks to Clive and Nigel from Blue Mountain Survival Training who trained us and the Jimmy Mizen foundation for providing the bus. Last but not least another massive thanks to Matt for allowing us young people to enjoy such life changing experiences.
